Kisite Mpunguti Marine  Park: is a protected marine area in Kenya, celebrated for its spectacular coral reefs and rich aquatic life. Located off the country’s southern coast near the Tanzanian border, it is a premier destination for snorkeling, diving, and dolphin watching.

Location and geography
  • Location: The reserve is situated off the coast of the fishing village of Shimoni in Kwale County.
  • Composition: The park encompasses four small islands, Kisite Island and the three Mpunguti Islands, surrounded by a large area of pristine coral reefs. Kisite is the main island, while the Mpunguti islands are smaller and covered in dense forest.
  • Accessibility: The park is only accessible by boat, typically a traditional dhow, from Shimoni. It is a popular day trip for visitors staying in nearby Mombasa or Diani Beach.

1. Snorkeling

  • Most popular activity; often done from traditional dhow boats.

  • Spot dolphins, reef fish, sea turtles, and coral gardens.

  • Shallow reefs make it ideal for beginners and children.

2. Scuba Diving

  • Great dive sites for beginners and experienced divers.

  • Coral gardens, drop-offs, caves, and channels.

  • You might encounter barracudas, rays, octopus, and reef sharks.

  • Commonly spotted species: spinner, bottlenose, and humpback dolphins.

  • Boat tours often include dolphin tracking.

  • Humpback whales migrate through the area from July to October.

 5. Island Tours & Cultural Visits

      • Visit Wasini Island: no cars, Swahili villages, seafood lunches, and mangrove boardwalks.

      • Explore Shimoni Caves: historical caves once used in the slave trade.

Activities
1. Game Drives
Great chance to spot rhinos, lions, and more.
Morning and evening are best for activity and lighting.
2. Bird Watching
Ideal all year round, but best after rains (Nov–April).
Use the lake viewpoints for excellent photography.
3. Picnicking
Baboon Cliff and Out of Africa viewpoint: Scenic spots overlooking the lake.
4. Photography
Landscape photography is fantastic, especially at sunrise/sunset.
5. Nature Walks (limited areas)
Some areas like Makalia Falls offer short trails (depending on conditions and KWS rules).
